What are research peptides?

An introduction to short-chain amino acid sequences and their use as biochemical research tools.

Definition

Peptides are short chains of amino acids — typically between 2 and 50 residues — linked by amide (peptide) bonds. They are smaller than proteins but share the same fundamental chemistry, and many biological signaling molecules in nature are peptides.

In a research context, a 'research peptide' is a synthesized sequence used strictly as a biochemical reference standard or laboratory reagent. It is not a drug, supplement, or therapeutic.

How they are made

Most research peptides are produced via solid-phase peptide synthesis (SPPS), pioneered by Bruce Merrifield. Each amino acid is coupled sequentially onto a resin, the protecting groups are removed, and the finished sequence is cleaved, purified by HPLC, and verified by mass spectrometry.

Purity, identity, and endotoxin levels are documented on a Certificate of Analysis (COA) accompanying each lot.
